Blog: Get Your Fix of Miami Museums This Summer

Just because the snowbirds have left Miami for the season doesn't mean the city’s high-brow culture closes up shop for the season. In the coming months, Downtown Miami will be awash with unmissable exhibitions at some impeccably curated museums. See something beautiful and learn something new at one of these upcoming shows. You can always head to the beach afterward.

American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora – “Forever Celia”

No exhibition this summer has the swing and swagger of “Forever Celia.” The American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora salutes the inimitable voice of salsa queen Celia Cruz in a show featuring her dazzling, derring-do outfits, artifacts from her personal belongings, and, naturally, lashings of her own soulful voice and songs. Whoever said you couldn’t strut your stuff at a museum exhibition. Until May 31

HistoryMiami Museum – “Queer Miami: A History of LGBTQ Communities”

Miami has a proud and strong LGBTQ community, but it hasn’t been smooth sailing to get to this point. “Queer Miami” is a powerful exhibition that uses poignant artifacts, photographs, and archive footage to tell the story of those who’ve fought for their rights, and the rights of countless others, in Florida and across the world. Black-and-white photos of Miami’s first Gay Rights Parade are a highlight. Until Sept. 1

The Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College – “Where The Oceans Meet”

Thirty-eight artists and collectives from across the globe — spanning a wide spectrum of artistic genres — come together for “Where The Oceans Meet.” As you might expect from such an ambitious project, major themes are explored, including the way in which borders can form identities and imaginary spaces. You can register now for the special opening reception on May 25. May 26 until Sept. 29

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens – Various events

Even if you make your home in a Brickell Flatiron loft, you might be envious of the breathtaking Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. The former winter residence of industrialist James Deering is a sight to behold any time of the year, but it really comes into its own during the summer months. A program of events accompanies the incandescent gardens: Learn to mix cocktails from the 1910s and 1920s using ingredients from the garden (May 15); unwind and unfurl with outdoor yoga on the estate (May 19); use leaves and flowers from Vizcaya Village, along with the technique of blueprinting, to design your own garden (June 9). All summer
